ISLAMABAD — October 31, 2026 — Official Ministry of National Health Services data presented in the National Assembly has revealed a alarming nationwide surge in Child HIV Cases, with Sindh reporting the highest concentration of juvenile infections at 3,900 patients.

The comprehensive epidemiological data was submitted to the House in response to formal parliamentary inquiries regarding pediatric health, highlighting severe challenges in infection control, unsafe medical injections, and blood transfusion protocols.

What Are the Regional Statistics for Child HIV Cases in Pakistan?

According to official records provided by Federal Minister for National Health Services Syed Mustafa Kamal during parliamentary proceedings, pediatric infection records across all federating units reflect widespread regional exposure:

  • Sindh: 3,900 child patients (highest nationwide total).

  • Punjab: 1,765 registered pediatric cases.

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): 139 affected children.

  • Balochistan: 46 pediatric cases.

  • Islamabad Capital Territory: 30 child cases.

  • Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK): 4 registered child cases.

  • Gilgit-Baltistan: 1 registered child patient.

The health ministry noted that pediatric transmissions stem primarily from vertical mother-to-child transmission during birth, unscreened blood transfusions, and contaminated medical equipment used in rural health facilities.

How Many Total HIV Patients Are Registered Nationwide?

Responding to specific questions posed by PPP Member of National Assembly Dr. Sharmila Faruqui, the federal health administration outlined broader epidemiological metrics recorded up to September 2026:

  • Estimated National Burden: An estimated total of 417,214 individuals are currently living with HIV across Pakistan.

  • Official Registry: 92,148 individuals have been formally registered within national treatment networks.

  • Antiretroviral Therapy Coverage: Exactly 67,878 registered patients are actively receiving specialized Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) through federal and provincial treatment centers.

What Steps Are Being Taken to Stop HIV Transmission?

Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal assured lawmakers that federal and provincial health authorities have initiated joint containment protocols to halt secondary transmissions.

Key interventions include strict enforcement of blood transfusion safety standards, mandatory screening protocols at maternity units, expansion of pediatric ART centers, and awareness campaigns addressing healthcare practices to eliminate reused syringes.
