Code of Ethics – Umeed News

All members affiliated with Umeed News, including the editorial staff, reporters, photographers, and bloggers, are bound by this Code of Ethics. Our mission is not merely to report the news, but to promote “hope” and “truth” in society through responsible journalism. This code has been formulated in light of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) guidelines and international journalistic standards.

1. Accuracy

  • Fact-Checking: Umeed News will not publish any information, image, or video that is inaccurate, misleading, or distorted.

  • Prompt Corrections: Any errors identified will be corrected promptly and given due prominence. If an error causes distress or damage, issuing a formal apology is mandatory.

  • Distinction of Content: A clear distinction must be maintained in editorial content between facts, speculation, and commentary.

2. Right to Reply

If a report contains allegations or negative claims against an individual or organization, Umeed News is obligated to provide the affected party with a fair opportunity to respond prior to publication, or promptly thereafter.

3. Respect for Privacy

  • Personal Life: Everyone is entitled to respect for their private and family life, home, health, and digital communications.

  • Consent: Taking photographs or videos of individuals in private spaces without their consent is considered an ethical breach.

  • Public Interest Exemption: Intrusion into private life is only permissible when justified by an overriding public interest.

4. Prohibition of Harassment

  • Conduct: Journalists must avoid intimidation, harassment, or persistent stalking in pursuit of information.

  • Right to Refuse: If an individual clearly requests not to be interviewed or photographed, journalists must cease contact immediately.

5. Grief and Shock

  • Compassion: Reporting on accidents, tragedies, or loss of life must be handled with the utmost sensitivity and a compassionate approach.

  • Suicide Reporting: In cases of suicide, detailed descriptions of methods or means will not be published to prevent copycat behavior.

6. Protection of Children

  • Minors (Under 18): Interviews or photographs concerning private matters involving a child require the consent of a parent or guardian.

  • School Activities: The educational activities of children within school grounds must not be unduly disrupted.

  • Sexual Abuse: The identity of minor victims of sexual abuse or exploitation must never be disclosed, regardless of legal permissions.

7. Hospitals and Medical Institutions

Entry into restricted or sensitive wards of hospitals requires prior administrative approval and clear identification of the journalist. Patient confidentiality must be protected under all circumstances.

8. Crime Reporting and Non-Discrimination

  • Identity: The relatives or family members of a suspect will not be identified unless they are directly complicit in the alleged offense.

  • Elimination of Bias: Content inciting hatred or discrimination based on religion, race, ethnicity, gender, language, or physical disability will not be published.

9. Financial Journalism

  • Privileged Information: Journalists must not use non-public financial or commercial information for personal gain.

  • Conflict of Interest: Writing about the stock market or corporate shares must be free from any conflict of interest.

10. Protection of Confidential Sources

Umeed News accepts a strict ethical responsibility to protect the identity of confidential sources who provide information on the condition of anonymity.

11. Payment for Stories

  • Criminals: Payment will not be made to criminals or their associates for stories or photographs, unless there is an overwhelming and demonstrable public interest.

  • Witnesses: Financial incentives or payments will not be offered to judicial witnesses to preserve the integrity of the legal process.

12. Defining “Public Interest”

For Umeed News, the “public interest” includes, but is not limited to:

  • Exposing serious crimes or systemic corruption.

  • Protecting public health, safety, and the environment.

  • Preventing the public from being misled by statements or actions of individuals or organizations.

  • Safeguarding freedom of expression.

Note: Editors must ensure that the pretext of “public interest” is not weaponized to unjustifiably intrude upon personal privacy. The welfare of children under the age of 16 shall always supersede all general public interest considerations.
